EUROPEANS TO TOUR N.Z

WELLINGTON, January 12

Wellington land .certain ■other centres in the Dominion are to have a visit this season by a team of four British 'athletes, accompanied by a manager and by two renowned Finnish performers. For s'»mc time past, the N-ew -Zealand Amateur Attunin' Association has been negotiating with the Victorian A.A.A-, which is bringing the athletes to Melbourne to compete at thp Centenary Genies there this month, with a view to arrangements hying made for them to dome to New Zealand at the conclusion of thier Australian engagements. The proposals at fb’st advanced by the Victorian authorities were not regarded favourably in New Zealand, 'and the prospects of the tour eventuating appeared none too bright. This week, however, a fresh proposition was cabled from Victoria, and it was announced to-day by the Chairman of the N-Z.A.A A Council, Mr Austad, and the Secretary of the Association, Air Tracy, that the new terms had been accepted. The British team and the two Finns arrive at Wellington by the Wanganella on February 11, 'in company with the New Zealand team which will be returning from the Centenary Games.

i CENTENARY GAMES

MELBOURNE, January 13,

The selectors for t.hp Centenary Games to be held on January 26 and 28, keenly watched the inter-ejub athletic meeting on Saturday. J. Backhouse, with a brilliant run of 4min 22 3-5 s°cs, recorded the best time for the mile in Australia this season. Ray Moffatt covered the. hundred yards in ten seconds. Howard James did the 220 yards in 22 3-10 seconds.
