LONDON, January 12
The “Morning Post” draws attention to the cabled statements of Mr J. A. Lyons, Australian Premier. The ‘Post” thinks that it is possible that the British Government has now, abandoned the policy of a drastic redut* tion in the meat imports, and that the plan to /subsidise Lome-grown meat- may become a permanent one.
STATEMENT BY MR FORBES
WELLINGTON, January 12. The Prime Minister said to-day an arrangement legarciing quotas or re- | strictions on the New Zealand meat entering the United Kingdom would have to he made before the present short term agreements run out at the end of 31 arch. Consequently, this question could not 'be held over until an informal conference of Dominion representatives is held in England in May. The started between the British Government and the High Commissioner for New Zealand vSir J. Parr) and .Mr David Jones (representative of the Meat ProducOhs’ Board) would he resumed on January 20. “A decision will have to lie reached before the end of March,” Mr Forbes said: “As tho present -agreements run out then, the matter cannot be held over for the informal conference in May.”
He said the British Government wanted a levy on imported meat, so that the Home growers could he subsidised. and, with that, they were asking for a certain restriction, Mr Forbes said. If New Zealand did not agree to a British levy on imports a much heavier ciuota. would probably be imposed. However, it was impossible to sav at present what arrangements would be reached. While New Zealand was seeking for long term agreements, it was impossible to say " hat terms the United Kingdom would agree to. Britain had trade treaties with other countries, and while these mostly concerned da b y nrohuce, it was possible that the British Government might want to agree to arrangement,s extending to the time when these treaties expired in 1936. That would enable t,hem to review the whole position then. -
