MEAT QUOTA

IN AUSTRALIA

AN AGREEMENT REACHED

(United Press Association—By Electric

Telegraph—Copyright,

(Received this day at 11.10 a.in.) DEVON PORT (Tasmania), Jan. 12. Mr Lyons announced that Britain has accepted Australia’s proposals for the fixation of quantities of veal, beef, mutton and lamb that may be ex.VV**.ed from Australia to England up to March 31.

Mr Lyons said that British imports from Australia, for thi s period will be 187,000 cwt. of veal and beef, of which not more than 30.(KK)cwt.s ol beef will be chilled, 450,000 cwts. of mutton and lamb and 107,000 cwts of pork. excluding baconers. These figures represent a total advance of 3,000 cwts in the average amount shipped from Australia to the United Kingdom in the corresponding quarters of the previous year and to that extent they are in excess of Britain’s proposed regulations. “Tn the circumstances,” said Mr (Lyons, “I think the arrangements may be regarded as reasonable. The quantities of beef including chilled and veal provided for ore believed by the industry to be completely satisfactory. It is not anticipated that they would lead to any curtailment of either killing or shipment. At my suggestion t/ie British Government lias agreed to a postponement till after my arrival in Britain of the framing of a long term policy which will run from March 31, to the end of the term, of the Ottawa 'agreement in 1937.”
