Early on Thursday morning the Post and Telrgvqih 'Department advised morning newspapers that cable communication with the Sydney office was temporarily suspended as -a heavv storm near that, office had caused the operator to earth all his lines. A message received from the Pacific cable station at Auckland to this effect mentioned that there would probably be some delay to traffic. The delay was probably caused by an electrical storm right over the ‘station which, if communication was would blow all the fuses and might, if the stony was sufficiently severe, start a fire. earthing the station all transmitting and receiving lines would be rendered ineffective, but tbo apparatus would be safe. There was no danger to human life beyond that of fire. Such storms are not frequent in New Zealand, but are more common in Australia. The operator in Sydney would have to waft till the storm moved away or lessened m force before cable communication could be resumed. Such action would .only bo taken as a precaution to save the wires and any possible chance of an outbieak of fire in the office 1 .
