Upon their arrival they were accorded a civic welcome at the ground wlieie a small number of residents had assembled, and gave the visitors a warm welcome. As the plane cani e with a rush low down over the town, right on time, there was a rush out from the houses to view the fliers, who went direct to the aerodrome, circled and came to rest very quickly.
To commemorate the silver jubilee of !:i.s Majesty the King’s accession to the throne, a. special series of postage stamps cf the denominations of Mild and 6d are to be issued by the .\eiv Zealand Postal Department. These stamps will be placed on sale for 'approximately one month from Accession Day, May 6, 1935, and during that period, will replace temporarily the corresponding values i u the series then current. It has also been decided by the Government to issue a new series of air-mail stamps of the denominations of Id, 3d and 6d. Some little time will elapse; however before the new stamps are placed on sale.
On her recent trip from Bluff to Westport (says the “Southland Times”) the Government- steamer Matai touched at a rocky islet off Cascade Point where a seal rookery was located. Only once in 20 trips can a landing be effected at this islet, so the passengers were fortunate .in obtaining an intimate glimpse of that increasingly rare and interesting ureature, the fur seat. There were fully 200 seals on the rocks —a fact which, in view of the fear that they were rapidly becoming extinct, was most gratifying. Some were fierce old men. others were anxious mothers, others again were youngsters. The elderly males were apt to he aggressive. particularly if they sensed they were being cornered. The agilty of tile'seals, both on the rocks' and in the water, was astonishing, particularly when their weight was considered The visit to the rookery proved both entertaining and instructive. ‘Fur. seals, it may be mentioned, are protected-
