A Gazette notice issued to-night con■tains a return of the estimated population of the Dominion proper at September 30, as follow ;
Total population, including Maoris— Males 790,887, females 760,898, total 1,551,785. Population excluding Maoris—Males 752,551, females 725,519, total 1,478,070. tMaori population—-Males 38,336, females 35,379, total 73,715. North Island, including Maoris— Males 516,530, Females 487,638, total 1,004,168.
South Island, including Maoris— Males 274,357, Females 273,260, total 547,617.
During the quarter ended on September 30, the population showed an increase of 2830, compared with 2420 for tho corresponding quarter last year.
