FLOOD DAMAGE
LATEST REPORT FROM NORTH. SEVERAL CENTRES INUNDATED. (Per Press Association.— Copyright.) "WHANG ARE 1., July 9. The latest reports of the flooding in the north, caused by a deluging downpour early yesterday, give the returns with a maximum of inches of rain for the previous 24' hours. In W’ha-ngarei, where several of the town streets resembled rivers, much damage has been occasioned, affecting the Iwtter factory, and business premises, while further north, Kuwakawa, Kaitaia, and othen centres are deeply inundated;
Generally, considerable loss lias been entailed by the demolition -ol bridges, and scouring of roads. Temporarily disabled, road 1 arid railway services in a number of places have now been restored in most instances.
CLOUDBURST IN N. AUCKLAND. WHANGARET, July 9. Later, messages from Kawakawa says the fall was -akin to « cloudburst exceeding 5£- inches. The racecourse is submerged to a depth of ten feet. The -railway has been washed out in several - places between Kawakawa and. TaurmU'ere, also in a -number of stretches between Qtiria and Motat.au, but it is anticipated full services will be -restored by to-night. At Kawakawa- two families were rescued from swamped homes just in time by men who waded neck deep in the water.
