Disapproval at the fee of £2 2s charged by the department for leaving certificiates, was expressed by Mr R. Peddcr at the School Committee meeting last evening. In his opinion it ‘was ridiculous. If a scholar was able to win his way through to the university, well, let him, but it was too much to ask a fee for the certificate, as in many cases, parents were in poor circumstances, and this charge was not fair. The Rector (Mr J. L. Menzies), said this certificate which had only been recently introduced gave those who had been in' a secondary school for three years, something to show for their work. Previously, matriculation had been the only qualification. This certificate was of a more practical nature, and covered a wider scope than matriculation, and would enable many pupils to secure employment. Matriculation would now be taken mainly by those going for a university degree. It was decided that

tlie Committee enter a protest against the charging of the fee.
