ATLANTIC GALES

OCEAN -SHIPPING DELAYED. (Per British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 19. Terrific gales in the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay during the last few day delayed the arrival of liners at ports, in some cases by as much as 48 hours. On her ways from New York to Plymouth, a window on the promenade deck of the 25,000 tons French liner La Fayette was smashed by waves seventy feet high. Gusts of wind of 100 miles an hour struck the vessel, which had to hove-to for several hours. The P. and O. liner Mantus, 11,000 tons, reached Plymouth 12 hours late, from the seas encountered in the Bay of Biscay, which her officers described ns the worst weather for 20 years. The Mantus had to heaveto for 12 hours and no passengers were allowed on the decks for some days.

A strong north-westerly grie yesterday prevented several ships from docking at 'Liverpool.
