NEGRO BURNED, NOT HANGED
PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNOR

NEW YORK, November 29
In connection with the lynching of Lloyd Warner, a young negro, for at- ! tacking a white girl, it is now revealed that the negro was literally burned alive, and not hanged, while a madly laughing woman shouted encouragement to the lynchers. The sheriff explained that he turned the prisoner over to the mob for fear that ten other negros and sixty white men in gaol might also be subjected to mob hysteria and innocent prisoners might be killed. Governor Park, of Missouri, announced thsb. Tjier.e ( \yopld h b<? a, „th.pr-, ough investigation. He said: There was no justification for the affaii. The lynching was a dangerous blow to our constitution law and civilisation. I want the mob leaders prose-. Cuted.

In Maryland, habeas corpus proceedings resulted in the return or four prisoners to the Maryland lynching scene, where people started a boycott against Baltimore goods, as a protest against Governor Ritchie's action. The latter, in a formal statemen to-day, declared: It is my plain duty as Governor of Maryland to see that the law is supreme, and it was only when local officials failed to perform their duties that I acted.”
