BACON AND PIG INDUSTRY

WELLINGTON, May 23

Discussing New Zealand’s industry, Mr J. G. Coates, Acting Prime Minister, in-am interview, drew attention to a" substantial increase id the killings for export, compared to the pry-rvims year. For the season of seven months ended on April 30th last, he said 178,000 porkers anu 50,000 baconers had heejn killed for export, making a total ,of 237,000. The total quantities for 1930-31 were 120,351 ; and those for 1931-32 were 115,440. / ... The Minister recalled that an extension of the market for bacon and the pig industry was discussed at Ottawa Conference. It was. then under-

stood that the British Government’s policy would provide for s om c expansion in thg Home and the Dominions’ (supplies of big products.

Mr Coates also referred to the -getting up of a committee associated .with the Department of Agriculture,* the Meat Board, and the Agricultural Cob leges. This committee had recommended the, establishment of the' grading of pigs for‘export. A grading sys. tem had beep, decided upon, said Mr Coates, and iwill come into operation shortly..
