YOUTH REMANDED TILL MONDAY

AUCKLAND, April 17

A young man who was arrested near Frankton on Saturday night, Christopher Niven, 19 years of age, appeared in the police court to-day and was charged that on April 14, at Mercer, he. attempted to murder James Pennington Bates. He was remanded till Monday. Later, the Magistrate held a special sitting of tiie Court at the public hospital, where Bates, who is to undergo a second operation this afternoon, lay in bed. The accused, guarded by a constable, stood at the foot of the bed. Bates gave evidence, in the course of which he definitely identified the accused as the motorist who had shot him.
