ART UNION AID
FOR PROSPECTING* AT THAMES. SUM OF £SOO ALLOTTED. (Per Press Association — 1 Copyright.) THAMES, November 21. The sum of £SOO from the proceeds of the Merry Xmas Art Union, t 0 be drawn on January 14, has been allotted to the Thames Prospecting Association in response to ya • request for assistance ■in furthering it s objects, particularly in regard t 0 testing low-grade ore areas of the Thames goldfield. The. Association has received .definite advice to this effect from the Minister of Internal Affairs.
In its letter to the Government asking for financial help, the Association said that there was n 0 district in New Zealand where expenditure in prospecting wa s likely to produce more satisfactory .results than Thames, and a revival of goldmining woufd go i long way toward lifting the town Oat of its present difficulties. The percentage of men out of employment in Thames, the Association stated, was greater than any other mining district in New Zealand. If the money asked for wna mad© available the Association would, beside providing other prospecting, take immediate steps to test low-grade ore areas which it considered could be worked profitably. An application from the Association for a grant t 0 cover incidental expenses came before the Unemployment Committee. It was pointed out that the efforts of the Association were entirely in the interests of Thames and district. It was decided to vote to the Association from the committee’s funds*
