MELBOURNE CUP WINNER.

SUCCESSOR TO PHAR LAP?

(Australian Pxjss Association.)

SYDNEY, Nov. 2,

The. “ Telegraph” says: Peter Pan is a turf 'star with unbounded possibilities and though lacl.ng Phar Lap’s personality, will adequately fill the champion’s place. He ran at the rate of thirty-five miles an hour, while the velocity* of the hardest gusts of wind in the afternoon was only thirty. Atfer getting out from a jam, it looked, a hopeless chase but Duncan never gave up. When Yarramba shot in front in the straight, the race seemed over, hut a hundred yards from the post, Peter Pan was within half a length and with a mighty burst gained the advantage. It was an extraordinary effort such as may never be seen again. The “Herald,” commenting on the Cup, says The race was won almost literally in the last stride. It was the most thrilling‘finish in the history of the race. Five furlongs from, home Peter Pan was about seventh near tlje rails, and met interference costing him five or six lengths. Duncan manoeuvred onward, and got through |he field till inside a furlong from the post he was .near enough to challenge Yarramba, who had shot in front. .Stride bv stride. Peter Pan overhauled the leader till they were neck and neck, and at the supreme moment, the challenger forged ahead by a neck, and was acclaimed the winner. Shadow King did not have a clear run but from a rear position at the hack of the .course he pushed on doggedly.
