Paki.iamest having diluted the issue of a writ for the election of a member to represent Motueka seat in*the Hong'*, ip place of the late Mr G. C. O. Black/ it will now be only a few days before the actual date' of the election is settled. At present there, are four candidates announced to contest the election, Mr P. O. Webb (Labour), Mr Holvoake (Coalition Reform), Mr York (Mayor of Motueka, Independent) iand Hon. R. McKenzie (Independent). Of the four candidates two have already sat in the House of Representatives, Mr P. C. Webb as member for Grey some, twenty years ago, and Hon. R. McKenzie, who first entered Parliament in 1893 when he waft elected as member ■ for Buller, and was ft memher of the Beddon Ministry fur some years. As he was bom in 1852, he is now 80 years of age and' should be fairly outside the range of active polities. Mr Holyoa,ke and Mr York have not had Par? liamentary, experience, the former having been- defeated at the fast general election by the late member. It would he a pity if these four candr- 1 dates should go to .the poll, as it would only mean the splitting of the moderate vote, and it would be far preferable if a clean cut issue were put before the electors, who would then he able to decide as to which side of politics as presented by the two active parties in New Zealand at the present time, they would prefer to follow.
