OPIUM IMPORTER CONVICTED

AUCKLAND, November 2.
Peter Jcoepli McGavin, aged 35,y seaman, to-day was fined £225 ior importing opium, and £25 for having it jn lijs possession, in default six months’. .
The collector of customs said that McGavin ortiVid last August from Samoa in 1 the Maui Pomare, and brought fWertißis of prepared opium. Ho was about v to dispose of it last night when arrested. The qpiurn ha i bpin bought very cheaply in Saun a. In view of the large traffic in, opiuin, the collector asked for a heavy penalty.
