SHANGHAI, October 12

Mrs Woodroof, wife of the Accountant of the British American Tobacco Company, stationed at Harbin, in North Manchuria, was taking her children to school in a motor car when she encountered bandits. The chaffeur turned sharply to avoid them, when -■he •was :: shoti : a'Hd' : i\'o : a®dsa : : i; :':M’rs;:Woodroof jumped from the car with the children. She was shot dead. The children asonpcd to tin adjacent Russian home.

A FURTHER MESSAGE

SHANGHAI, October 13

Later details reveal that three bandits in military uniform held up the car which was driven by a young Russian, and attempted to kidnap the children. Mrs Woodroff fought vigorously, 'aided by the chaffeur and another Russian.

The mother was shot dead, and the two Russians wounded. The police, were attracted hv the shooting, the bandits taking to their heels, hut one was shot dead, another wounded and captured, while the third escaped. The outrage in broad daylight has distressed the foreign community.

Another message spells the chief victim as Woodroff.
