JUMPED INTO RIVER

TRAGEDY AT GREYMOUTH. ‘‘You chaps have been good fellows 1” said a. man on the Greymouth wharf early this morning to the nightwatchman, Mr Fouch, of the steamer Kaimiro, and, with the parting remark, “Well, I’m off,” he then jumped into the river.

The deed was done at the rear of the Tvaimiro, and no more was seen of the unfortunate man, except hie Jiat, which he left behind him on the wharf. His identity is not known, but the police, were informed as quickly as possible, and they began an investigation, It is understood that the man belonged ashore, and was not a seafarer. It is conjectured that he. was probably one of the unemployed who, in the absence of other means of support, had been obtaining some rations from ships in port, which would explain their parting tribute to the men of the ships a#- having been good fellows.
