TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “West- Coast Times” for week ending January 23rd 1907. Vice Regal Yi'ifc—On the stroke of 11 o’clock, the train bearing the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Plunket rolled in to Hokitika where his Excellency was received by the Mayor (Mr Michel), County Chairman (Mr W. Byrne), Hon J. Holmes, M.L.C., Hon H. R. Guinness, the mayor of R. ss (Mr T. W. Bruce), and members of the Hokitika Borough and County Councils. After cheers bad been given, the Town Clerk, Mr Andrewes read an address of welcome, His Excellency replying. A visit was paid to Like Kanieri in the afternoon while in the evening the vice-regal party was entertained at a consersazione in the Drill Hall. A musical programme was presented, items being given by; the Orchestral Society, Mrs A. D. Macfarlane, Misses Maggie Spence, Solomon, V. Larnacroft and Messrs W. B. Cad, iow, Robert Miller, and H. Seymour. Further addresses of welcome were given by Mr Seddon and Mr Michel. On Saturday the party was driven to Ritnu ■ where a visit was paid to the prospect - ng shaft, the work being fully explained to the Governor. Returning -*0 Hokitikn the guests vis’ted the Westland Hospital, Mental Hospital and gaol later proceeding to Stafford, and Goldsborougli and later to Kumara where thev entrained for Otira.

Croquet—A croquet match was played by tbe members of the Greymouth Club and a number of Hokitika players on -dir W. D man’s lawns on Saturday. The Ilokit ka pi y.rs scor_ ed a win the play being as follows: Mesdamos Duncan and Acheson were beaten by Mesdames Sami sou and Widdop. Mrs Hunter and Miss KetUe were beaten by Mesdames Beare and Malfroy, Mrs and -Hiss Skogland wire beaten by Mrs Huddleston and Miss and Mesdames Shol-rcss and Millington were beaten by Mesdames Michel, and Mesdames Shalcross and ency the Governor was an interested spectator for a while.

Riniu—The Rimu Miners’ Association have decided to remove the pumps from the prospecting shaft at Rimu, and yesterday the men were employed in carrying on the work. We understand the Association now intends to use their efforts to get a drainage, tunnel put in, ns the next step towards further prospecting. Visit of the Irish Delegate—Mr J. T. Donovan L.L. 8., the envoy from the Irish Party at Home arrived in Hokitika on Monday and was welcomed by the Mayor. In the afternoon he visited places of interest in the County, while in the evening he addressed a very large audience in the Princess Theatre. The Mayor presided and with him on the platform were the Rev. Fathers Graham, Qu : nn, Taylor, Gilbert and Messrs T. E. Y, Seddon, J. Crowley 'Rcss), E. O’Connor, J. McSherry, T. J, McGuigan, ,r. Downey, J .Sullivan, A Clifton, J. Toomev, J. J. Breeze 'and J. J. Bourke. Mr Donovan was given an attentive hearing, and at the end was accorded a very warm welcome, accompanied by ringing cheers.
