The unusual instance of a Magistrate adjourning a sitting of tbs Court to enable the reporters present to leave and make enquiries in regard to an alarm of fire occurred at Lyttelton on Wednesday. The Court had bean sitting for about fifteen minutes, when suddenly the proceedings were interrupted by the screeching of the siren from the Fire Tower opposite the Court, and from the window a dense cloud oi smoke could be seen in another part of the town, There was a stir amongst the police and reporters in Court, ami seeing some hesitation among the Pressmen, the Magistrate (Mr H. A. Young) said he would adjourn the Court while they ascertained the extent of the fire. However, the outbreak was only a grass fire, and in a few minutes the reporters and policemen returned to the Courtroom, ami the Court resumed.

In accordance with the resolution pased at the inaugural meeting of the Westland Aero Club last Wednesday evening, the secretary, Mr J. Renton, got into touch with Captain J. C. Mercer, of Christchurch with a view to the commencement of a .training class at Hokitika. Captain Mercer is in accord with the proposal, but before deciding on anything definite is anxious to hold a conference with members, when the matter can be fully discussed, and considered from every angle. Weather permitting, he will fly from Christchurch to Hok.’t ka on Monday, returning on Tuesday. Captain Mercer, who is instructor to the Canterbury Aero Club is sanguine for the success of the Club, and expressed pleasure at the step taken being confident that much good will eventuate from the conference on Monday,
