LYONS MINISTRY

The new Federal Ministry, headed by Mr Lyons, as Prime Minister, was to-day sworn in at Canbcria Indore the Governor - General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, as follows: Prime Minister and Federal Treasurer —Hon. Mir .1. Lyons; Attorney-General and Minister of External Affairs, also Deputy-Leader of the Government —Hon Mr Latham ; Minister of Defence and Leader <>l the Government in the Senate—Sir George Pearce; Minister of Trade and Customs —lion Mr Gnllett; Postmaster-General and -Minister of Railways—Hon. Mr Fenton; Minister of Markets-—Hon -Mr Hawker; Minister of Home Affairs— Hon Mr Parkhill; Minister of Health—Hon Mr Marr; Vice-President of the Executive Council nitd Miliister-in-Cliargc of Development—Seliittcir McLachlan j Honorary Ministers—Heins S; M. RrUce (Assistant Treasurer), Frances, Perkins aiitl Massey-Greeli. The retiring Prime Minister, Mr Seulliii, congratulated Mr Lyons, and assured him ot hearty co-operation in any efforts on the part of the Government to relieve the unemployment. Hon Mr Lyons later issued a message to the people of Australia. In this he set out the new Ministry s ideals, also assuring Great Britain and the other Dominions of the Minister’s earnest intentions to make the forthcoming conference at Ottawa a success. PARLIAMENT OPENS NEXT MONTH. MINISTER’S TASK. (Received this day at 10-15 a.m.) CANBERRA, January 6. The new cabinet has decided to open Parliament on February 17th. Mr Lyons announced that Mr Stanley Bruce has been given first place in the Cabinet seniority list after himself and Mr Latham. “His past experience and high qualification* entitle Air Bruce to a statu* not usually accorded assistant (Ministers” he said. Mr Lyons denied Mr Gnllett’s appointment as Minister of Trades and Customs would mean the tearing down of the tariff structure. “The Minister’s task will he to see that the tariff is framed in the interests of the whole nation, and not of sections. ’’
