THEFT OF £165

OF STOCKTON MEDICAL FUND

WESTPORT; November 4

Frederick Theobald, ix-Secretary of Stockton Medical Fund, to-day appeared before' Mr W. Meld mm, S-M., here, charged with the theft of sums of money, the property of Stockton Medical Association.

Detective Mutch asked that the present information -should be withdrawn, as a. fresh charge had been laid by the police. It wais 1 that, on or about 24th. March, 1933. ami 17th. August, 1931, the accused did steal' sums totalling £165 9s lid. Alfred Percy Strothers deposed to auditing the books of the Association for 1930, and making an investigation for the present year. He was assisted by A. Taylor, Town Clerk. As a result, a shortage in the maternity fund of £6l was discovered. The cash book was altered to cover up the shortage. That was .in 1930, and m 1931 the sum of £59 6s Bcl was short di'posited, and a. cadi tehlortage of £24 6s 6d was also discovered. It was apparent the sums had been misappropriated. The sum of £55 7s 3d was withdrawn from the Relief Medical Accounts, but only £2B 7s 3d was deposited, leaving a balance of £27 not accounted for. Witness was present at the police station on November 3rd., with Taylor, Morgan and Detective March. The accused gave every assistance to clear the matter up, and witness could hot understand how he got mo far behind. Detective Mureh stated that the accused gave every assistance in clearing up the defalcation, and later made a voluntary confession, which was produced. He also made an qdmission in regard to a. sum of £2O 16s / 8d withdrawn from the relief fund and not deposited. The accused surrendered himself to the police at Granity, and he was surprised that the amount misappropriated was so large, but he was ■satisfied with the auditor’s figures. The accused pleaded guilty, and he was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

Bail was granted. Counsel intimated that the accused was desirous of making restitution.
