There was an amazing'outbreak of mob violence at Pudukottah, in South India., following on the rejection by the Durbar of popular protest against the increasing of the property tax. The shops were closed by the mob. The streets were barricaded. The police and high members of the Government were stoned. The mob sacked the police station and threw the police records into the street and burned them. They looted and burned the police officers’ home, smashed . the grates of the central gaol, anddiberated the convicts. The gaol wardens fired, on them, killing two of the rioters, and wounding many more. The Government finally restored order bv calling ont the soldiers.
