AUDACIOUS BURGLARY,

WELLINGTON, July 16

What appears to have been a particularly audacious burglary was carried out on the night of June 29, or early the following morning at Wakefield Street, the premises of Messrs Goldingham and Beckett, general merchants, resulting in the firm losing £SOO worth of .tobacco and cigarettes. A reward of £250 is offered for the return of the goods. It is believed the thieves entered through the main door or else were on the premises and in hiding before the door was closed. The latter is most probable, as all the keys were accounted for and there is nothing to show the lock was tampered with. The weight of tobacco taken was seven hundredweight and it was loaded on to one of the firm’s lorries standing inside the entrance. The lorry was found next day in Cable Street nearby undamaged. The thieves haul was probably loaded on to another vehicle in waiting. A large quantity of patent medicine and matches on the lorry overnight was untouched. The lorry might have been driven out as late as six in the' morning, when the vicinity is busy with vehicles bringing supplies to the fruit market.
