Mr Meßrine, Auckland member of the Unemployed Board, stated there were now fifty-one thousand unemployed; in New Zealand, and Parliament would need to provide a Hum of one million sterling for relief. The Board’s outlay had reached a total of £836,000. The revenue from the first quarter’s levy was £159,000, and tne second quarter’s £152,000. Some paid the levy for both terms. From the third quarter to the end of the present week, it was estimated £IIO,OOO would lie received. That made a total of £421,000 without the Government subsidy. Under the Board’s first four schemes £167,540 was spent. Under No. 5 Scheme, which relieved 34,000 men the expenditure was £40.000 a week. The scale of relief under the No'. 5 Scheme was not sufficient.
