In connection with a report of a collision on Saturday night appearing yesterday, it was stated Mr A. Chapman was the drivei' of the car. Ibis is incorrect., the driver being Mr PJridgman of Ross.

The flood in the river yesterday was nt its height at 1 o’clock, when the tide was full. It caused the water to hack up in the drains and some of the low lying parts were under water in places, which soon disappeared as the tide fell. The run in the river was still a very considerable one in the evening.

The ceremony of launching Rimu Dredge No. 2 is fixed for 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. A platform has boon erected for the invited guests, and after the launching there will he a civic address presented to the management. A general invitation has been issued to the public to view the launching of the leviathan; dredge—one of the largest to operate in New Zealand.

The Kararnea correspondent of the Westport News says;—A hair raising mishap occurred on the Karamen road last Tuesday. Air AV. Goirdey, who was returning from AVestport in his motor lorry, got out to fix a puncture just about half a mile from the top of the Bluff. Ho was just gathering up the tools when the lorry “rode the jack” went off the block and, in the twinkling of an eye, crashed down the face of the Bluff Hill. The lorry was smashed to pieces and one can now peer about the face of the cliff to see a wheel here, the engine there, and fragments generally scattered round.

The death was reported yesterday at Hamilton of Mr P. R. Stewart a well known resident of Hokitika over several years, when he was in charge as manager of the National Bank here. Afr Stewart in addition to being a capable officer of file bank, took a great interest in the amenities of the town, and at the inception Alaeandrew Square Mr Stewart took over the arduous duties of putting the place in order. It was a labour of love with him and under his care and able management the reserve grew into a place of beau tv that won general commendation. Mr Stewart was also a prominent member of the Bowling Chib and was President for a term. His departure from the town to Hamilton was generally regretted, both Ab’ and Airs Stewart having won many warm friends in the district. The news of liis death will he regretted by a wide circle of friends, and to Mrs Stewart very sincere sympathy will he extended.

In connection with motor traffic to (lie launching of the dredge to-morrow, motorists will find Adair’s road im--oroved greatly in width and convenience. As the traffic will be abnormal, motor drivers will he expected to use every care, and the traffic will he under Inspector Rl'oss and assistants. Only the official cars may proiecd beyond the sawmill. At thud point, extra room lias been provided for parking, and when the area is filled, cars must turn •>nd head for town along the road side. Passenger busses plyiim for hire and running return trips to Hokitika, may deposit passengers at the workshop and then return to town. A meeting of the Local Unemployment Committee was held at the Town Hall last evening. Present:—Messr Perry (Mayor), TTeenan, McGavin. Hnrvev, Evans. Millnor. Cox (certifying officer) and Coles (acting secretary). A number of matters were discussed. chiefly relating to eligibility for employment under No. 5 scheme. A. circular from the Board was read oouveving certain stipulations governing eligible applicants, and several cases were considered in the light of flic conditions set out. Particulars were given also of a number of men supplied for 4A scheme for farmers. Tt was pointed out that those employed under the schemes must pay their levies promptly or they would be disqualified from work. For the period row entered on. the levy must be paid not later than next week or the employment- will cease. Evidence of the payment by production of the receipted coupon book will require to be produced to the local body paying officer. -Tt was decided to make enquiry from the Unemployment Board in respect to various matters of administration.

Yesterday afternoon- a mishap occurred at the Grey Power Board hydro works at Kaimata about 5 o'clock, when, as the result of a rise of about four feet in the Arnold Biver. the temporary dam at the intake tit the top end of the tunnel gave way. There were several slips, and tho result- was that the flood water from the river rushed through the tunnel. The flow continued for some hours, and at 9 p.m there was still a. great rush of water through the tunnel. The flood was not an exceptional one, but a.s the Arnold takes a good while to fall when Lake Brunner rises, the result will be some slight delay in the operations o) the contractors. The work of constructing the intake is at present in hand, and a few hundred feet of timber was lost when the temporary dam broke yesterday. The tunnel stood up to the flow well. About thirty of the men employed will he idled for two or three days by the mishap.
