The sittings of the Supreme Court for the West Coast circuit are now announced as follows: Greymouih June 10th. to deal with a motion to set aside an award, and miscellaneous matters The Westport sitting will commence on June 12th, Hokitika Monday June 16th, at 10.30 a.m., and Gre'ymouth on Tuesday, June 17ih.
A very kindly action was performed on Thursday by Sir E. I). Prentice, captain of the British Rugby team. An ex-member of Mr Prentice’s club (Leicester), who is a resident of Christchurch, has a son an inmate of the public hospital. The lad had expressed a hope of seeing Mr Prentice, and on Thursday his father asked the British captain if he could visit the children’s ward. Mr Prentice invme‘diatoly consented and paid a visit,to ward seven at 7 o’clock that evening. Thu Rugby player had a rousing reception from the children. .
At the Soldiers’ Hall at 2,30 o’clock to-morrow afternoon, Mrs O, Heinz will open tli.o first of a new series of gas cooking demonstrations, for the help and instruction of tho many users of gas. These demonstrations are free and open to the public, mid all interested are invited to attend.: Afternoon tea will be served during the class. Some of the latest gas cooking appliances will be in use and all necessary instruction given as to the price of the cookers, which are procurable on very easy terms. The demonstrations will he conducted fortnightly on every alternate Tuesday afternoon. The menu for to-morrow will include, exhibition cakes, Jewish butter ' biscuits, meat pies, waffles and scones.
There was a large attendance on Saturday at the Kumara sports, there being £25 taken at the gate, while at the ball on the previous eveping the proceeds totalled about £SO. Win. Neame, who is scarcely eighteen years of age, won the main chopping event, the open handicap. Another chop was also won by him, while C. Neame also won a chop, and the married men’s chopping event was won by Ivor Steel, who thus secured a cabinet of cutlery (a special prize donated by Mr Spiers. Mayor of Kumara). R. Ritchie and mate secured the double-handed saw prize, while B. Cooper and McGrath won the young men’s races. In the bicycle race E. Thomas was successful!. Three cousins, Havill (2) and Cotikj Caine to gtief in this event.
The Greymouth Chamber of Commerce wrote to the Council of the Canterbury Chamber stating that It mul passed a resolution expressing sympathy with the movement for the construction of a connecting road hetween Canterbury and the West Coast, via the Lewis Pass. The Chamber recognised the advantage the road would be to both provinces, as in the event of the Otira Gorge road being impassable through slips or other cause a thorough connection by road would he maintained. The letter expressed the hope that the Canterbury Chamber would bring all pressure possible to bear on the Government in an endeavour to have the work carried out. The letter was referred to the Tran,snort Committee of the Canterbury Chamber to confer with the Canterbury Progress League regarding the matter.
