So far the Australian Eleven now touring England has had -to contend against very unpleasant climatic conditions, and it has been fortunate to escape without disaster. But in spite of frequent rain, cold winds and sodden wickets Bradman succeeded in realising one of the greatest of all cricketing ambitions by making over 101)0 rus befor& the beginning of June; Only fciul‘ other batsmen* including the gl-eat “W.GJ’ have attained this eminence, and nothing else was needed to ostalish Bradman’s fame ns one of the greatest batsmen that Australia ima yet produced, His youth and oumparativo inexperience, especially under such rigorous conditions, add immensely to the glory of the achievement, At the same time, it may he pointed out, Australia’s howlers have had some benefit from the prevailing conditions, and, G-rimmett has taken more than fifty wickets before the tour is one-third over—-a truly remarkable feat. It is true that Grimmett has already had more than his fair share of work, and the. other howlers of the side have been, with the exception of Hornibrook, rather disappointing. But taking all the circumstances into account ,the performances of the Australian team so far are decidedly encouraging in regard to the coming Tests, the first of which is set down to commence next Friday. A decided departure was taken on this occasion in selecting a team of young men for the task of recovering the ashes. The bold action promises to bear good fruit. All the chosen men have not played up to reputation yet, hut the men must be playing into form now, and by the deciding day will no doubt use every effort to render the best account of themselves. Intense interest is taken in the tour in Australia, and the enthusiasm will communicate itself in no small degree to New Zealand here cricket is growing in popularity. The Australian team as a whole deserves all credit for their showing so far, for there is every indication that the Tests will he a real trial of strength on the present tour.
