In tlie House of Lords, Lord Elibank stated Britain was at the parting of the ways. Unemployment was rife and becoming worse. Trade was declining and protective barriers were being established against British exports, throughout the world. It was becoming more and more difficult for British trade to penetrate America and Europe. There was a larger trade from tiie United States with tlie Dominions and Colonies than from Britain, yet tiie Government was content to amble along the old free trade path with an . occasional palliative only touching tlie fringe of the problem,
