STEAMER CRASHES
INTO BIRKENHEAD WHARF., . « _ - l CRUSHES KETCH TO MATCHWOOD ENORMOUS DAMAGE 'DONE. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) ADELAIDE,, October 4. The motor ship Manunda, turning into Port River, apparently got out df control, snapped a hawser connected to a tug, .and crashed stern first into Birkenhead wharf. An auxiliary ketch was crushed to matchwood and sank immediately.. A huge gap was made in the wharf. Piles two feet in diameter were snapped off and two other ketches were badly damaged. The owners managed to scramble to safety. The damage to the wharf is estimated'at £300,000 (?) and to the ketches £2,000. The Manunda’s stern was badly dented. -
