The Queensland elections were held yesterday. They resulted in the deteat of the Labour Party, which has controlled the Government of Queensland fjor the past fourteen years.

The early returns go to show that the Opposition parties have gained 15 seats, including three held by Cabinet Ministers, namely those of Labour (Ai r Gledson), La ink (Air Dunstun) and Railways (Mr Larcombe) and also a seat bold by the Speaker (Air Bertram).

Mrs Longman, who has gained ’.lie Buiiinhe: seat for Thirty, is. the first woman to he elected to the .Queensland Parliament. Mr McCormack said that the people had changed their Government, and they therefore deserved all that they would get later. The Premier, Mr McCormack Ts safe in his seat Cairns, but his majority is reduced fr0m.2242 to 790. .The leader of the Opposition, Mr Moore, at Aubogny heads the Independent .’candidate! Mr Gore by 1563 votes. This lead is six hundred votes loiks than ho had at the - last election - 1 The Home Secretary is likely to lose the Mount Morgan seat and the Minister of Works, Mr Kirwan,' is only three- votes ahead of. the Nation--alist Mr Thatcher in Brisbane. The Speaker Mr Bertram; has occupied the chair of the. Queensland House for nearly a dec-ade, and his ruling has never yet ‘been dissented from by a motion in tho House. The “father” of the House, MiBarber, whose majority at Bunchiberg last election was 1314, has. now a lead of only sixty-one votes but be is expected to hold tlm scat.
