Throughout India the orthodox Hindus observed time-honoured “ Tester ’.’ of the partial eclipse of the sun. The bathing ghats at Calcutta were thronged by tens of thousands, it being obligatory to fast during the eclipse, to bathe in the Ganges, and to feed and give presents to beggars.
