IMPORTANT BRIDGES

AUTHORITIES TO ERECT

(Grey “Star.”)

Approval of plans submitted by the Public Works Department and authorities to call for tenders for erection have been received by Mr T. A. Johnton, district engineer in Greymouth. in connection with two bridges which are at the moment of primary importance to South Westland, while a eolira ct has also been let for erection of the Punakaikai and Porarari bridges on the Westport to Greymouth coastal highway. At the meeting of the No. 12 District Council of the Main Highways Hoard at Weheka on Wednesday, Mr D. J. Evans, representative of the Westjand County Council, succeeded in having a resolution recorded urging that the building of the Omoeroa and Doherty bridges be expedited Doth will be on the section of highway between Waiho and Weheka, which will give access to great areas of first class fanning land between the Cook River and the bnckblocks southward of Karangaroa towards the Haast and The Weheka. Settlers in the South are anxious to know when the bridges would be built and were somewhat sceptical when told that authority might he expected at any time. The news will therefore be glad tidings to the Westland County Council and to those who have developed South Westland in spite of its isolation, while it is also of national importance in bringing the wonders of the glaciers and mountain scenery more within reach by tourists.
