PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. AUCKLAND, Jan. 18. The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington, virtually the deciding game in this season’s scries, opened at. Eden Park to-dav, under ideal conditions. Lowry gained a great advantage for Wellington when he won the toss and the visitors occupied the wicket for the whole day, scoring 808 for the loss of nine, wickets. A feature of the batting was a line innings by Worker for Ujl. Making bis first appearance in Shield cricket this season, the cxAuckland player, who now resides in Napier, gave a stylish display, with only one difficult chance in the slips after be had passed the half century. Dempster also hatted well for 77, but survived a confident appeal for a catch behind the wickets early in his innings. Lowry was aggressive, and I. showed very sound form. James was shaping well when he was foolishily run out by liiddlcston. The Wellington tail failed Imdly after the tea adjournment, four wickets falling for 39 runs. The Auckland howlers had an unenviable task, but Allcott, in addition to directing the attack most aiily, proved that he is still the most reliable -bowler in N.Z., by sending down 46 overs, 12 of which were maidens, and taking four wickets for 83 runs. Bowley was also accurate and required careful watching. Rcnv u tree was in good form and was responsible for two wickets, his stumping of Worker being exceptionally brilliant.
