occurred in various parts of the country il'roin falling trees and tiles, and the channel and Irish sea services wore suspended. The German cadet training barque Pommern. off Guernsey, sent out distress signals and another German ship rescued forty cadets, the British mine layer Adventure, rescuing the remaining forty.

There were mountainous seas in the Ray of Biscay where a large French liner was in distress.

High winds continue over England to-day, 'following yesterday’s gale, in which heavy rainstorms were accompanied by wind which ill times reached SS miles an hour at Liverpool and many other places. Eight people were killed on land by falling trees and chimneys. Alost of tin* Channel services were cancelled, hut were running as usual to-day, except that Boulogne traffic is diverted to Calais. Three seaplanes moored at Portsmouth wore sunk by heavy seas, but two are in comparatively shallow water, although the third was smashed against a breakwater. Ramsgate motor lifeboat made two journeys and rescued men from Deal herring boats and Bemberidgc. The Isle of Wight lifeboat went to the aid of the Soviet tanker Neil’tc Syndieat, which issued distress calls oil' St. Catherine’s Point. Her steer-ing-gear had been smashed and she asked for two Lugs.

The departure from Southampton ol S.S. Edinburgh Castle lor the Cape and S.S. Tnseania for New York was delayed for some hours and S.S. .Majestic from Now York was late m reaching Liverpool. violent seas to the west in the Not th Sea and English Channel. Lifeboats have been called on in several places and have effected gallant rescues, 23 lives being saved and one life lost when the New Brighton lifeboat set out to assist the French steamer Emile Delmas, of 2,000 tons, yesterday. After lighting through tremendous seas for 15 miles, the lifeboat reached the vessel. whose’anchor cables bad broken. The crew .jumped for it and were pulled safely aboard, although this took over an hour. Then a huge wave washed two of the crew and cliiel engineer ot Ihe French steamer overboard, the last-named slipping through a iilebuoy and drowning, captain Poussin of the Emile Delmas paid a warm tribute to the bravery of the lifeboat’s crew. The arrivals and departures of liners has been delayed.

t Sii- Austen Chamberlain and party were due to arrive at London from Canada to-day, but owing to the weather S.S. Regina, on which they are travelling, was late m docking at Liverpool, having to await her turn on the land extension. Minor damage was done by the gale. Weather iforecasts anticipate a continuance of rough conditions.
