PROFESSORS DEGRADED

RIGA, Nov. 25

The Soviet has degraded fourteen professors, members of the Academy or Science and residents of Leningrad, for defaming the Soviet regime abroad, by participating- in a volume devoted to archaeology of art, published in Prague and especially resenting the academician. Zhebcleff, writing the biography of the archaeological, Amirnof, who died in 1028, declaring:—“He was fortunate in dying then, because he avoided the evil of the decade.”

Entitled “Alarming Figures,” the Soviet has published a report on arson. incidental to fires in the countiysido since October 1927, to the number of 110,000, largely due to strife, vengeance and hooliganism. One village was set on fire twenty-one times, another twenty and a third eighteen times. Eight villages were completely destroyed.

“On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand I wish to express the deep concern with which the news of the King’s illness lias been received and an earnest hope that His Alajcsty’s health will soon he restored. All in this Dominion anxiously await further news, and desire me to convey their loyal sympathy.
