A DRUNKARD’S -GRIEVANCE
AUCKLAND, -July 12
AA’illiam. Aitken was full; of complaints when .-charged with being disorderly while drunk in Princess Street yesterday. Stating he was-deaf, .lie informed the Bench that he wanted to stand near the witness EOx to hear what the arresting constable was saying. Magistrate McKean: You will stay where you are.
“Oh, will I,” replied Aitken. “Mr Hunt always allows me to go up near the box.”
Turning to the reporters, Aitken shouted: “And • don’t you remember my name tins time. You blackened it before. A T ou are mongrels and blackguards.”
Accused was remanded for a week for medical observation.
BITTEN BY DOG
INFANT A AWARDED DAMAGES
CHRISTCHURCH, July 12.
Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £l3 19s in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr H. A, Young, S.M. in a case in which was beard on Tuesday. '■ .
The case concerned a. girl of eight, years of age, who claimed damages, 1 alleging that she bad been bitten on the nose by a dog. Thomas Dexter Valentine, of. 474 Tua.ni Street, Christchurch, father of tlie infant, Ruby Valentine, sued on her behalf, claiming from Margaret Berry, and Thomas Arthur Berry, of 488 Tuam street, £2B 19s, as damages allegedly duo to the plaintiff being permanently marked and scarred liy a bite from defendant’s dog on March 2Gth. last. The claim consisted of £1 los hospital expenses, £2 4s wages of servant, and £25 general damages. Air AY. F. Tracy appeared for the plaintiff, and Air A. AY. Brown for the defendants.
The Afagi.strnto found that the girl luvl been bitten by the dog, and awarded £lO general damages and £3 194 special damages.
INCENDIARISM ALLEGED,
BLENHEIM, July 13
St. Afniy’s boys’ school, a, substantial wooden structure in Blenheim., was virtually destroyed by fire last night, the circumstances pointing to incendiarism. Tbe building was previously ablaze on. June 17th, when tbe outbreak was discovered in time to bo suppressed. Insurances are only £GOO on the building and £IOO on tho furnishings in the Phoenix. It will probably cost £3,009 to replace.
UNEMPLOYED LOAN
AVELLINGTON, July 13.
Tho Alnyor, at last night’s meeting of tlie AYellington City Council, brought up the matter of another loan of £15,000 sterling for unemployed relief works. In reply to a question, the Mayor said, they were now employing 307 men. Councillor Ale-Keen said it did not seem that they were touching the fringe of the trouble as he noticed there, were over four hundred still on the list.
The Alnyor said they were coming in all tlie time but he thought the Council was carrying its full burden. Tlie propose! was agreed to.
