CREDIT WHILE BANKRUPT

HAMILTON, July 11

Expressing the opinion that the loose way credit was given was amazing, Mr Patterson, S.M., sentenced George Wallace Barker, of Matamatn, to a week’s imprisonment for obtaining credit to the extent of £G3 while ail undischarged bankrupt.

WELLINGTON, July 12.

The following resolutions were passed:— (1) —That this Council affirms that the Protestant Political Association has no political party allegiance, and urges all members in the forthcoming general election to supjiort only those candidates for Parliament who may he relied on to place the great moral, social and patriotic interests of the Dominion and Empire above party consideration. f

(2) —That this Council protests against the extension of railway concessions to hoarders attending private and sectarian .schools, under the regulation as gazetted in the “New Zealand Gazette No. GO, August 25th. 1927, page 2764;” and expresses the conviction that the railway concessions already in force are inimical to the interests of tlio national system of education, both primary and secondary, and help to foster religious destructions and animosities prejudicial to the welfare of the State and the people, whilst other countries, e.g., Italy and France, are legislating to strengthen the national system of education, New Zealand by concessions is favouring the creation of private and sectarian schools, the results of which are already manifest and will become increasingly so in the cleavage of society.

The following officers were elected : President, Mr L. A. Taylor, L.L.8.; Vice-Presidents, Messrs L. A. Rhodes. J. Cocker and G. J. Harford; Executive, Messrs Ashman, Bridget - , Mayes, Hughes; Dominion Secretary, Rev. Howard Elliott.

LAND SETTLEMENT. AUCKLAND, July 11

Tlie Auckland Winter Exhibition opened to-day, Mr McLeod, Minister of Lands was present.

Explaining the diffidence shown by tho Government towards the ambitions while he fully recognised a.great deal more country was awaiting development, tho ,Government bad i.o lie cautious, lost the interests of men already on the land should suffer by tho over concentration on unoccupied lands. Tho first essential was to .keep there, those men already on the land, and establish their position. Ho referred to the success of small farming such as fruitgrowing, stating that last year apples exported from the Dominion were worth half a million. Tho Government now proposed to subsidise the poultry industry by a subsidy on the export of eggs, and tho same would bo done with the pig industry on the export of pork.

AUCKLAND WINTER SHOW. AUCKLAND, July 10

The New Zealand butter championship at tho Auckland Winter Exhibition was won by tlio New Zealand Dairy Coy. (Waiuku Factory) with 96 points.

druru (Fail-hum Coy.) and the Waitnki Company were second with 95) points, and Karamen next with 94).

The New Zealand Cheese Championship was again won by Lowgarth with 95). Ngaliero being second with 95, and Huknmii third with 94).

GAOL FOR THEFT

CHRTfSTCHUR.CH, July 12

At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Mosley, S.M., sentenced four shunters for theft of Railway Department goods as follows:—James Tleibert South to four months gaol.

Ernest Alfred Dobicr and Thomas Charles Harris Marks, to one month. Cecil Leslie Howard to three months, all with hard labour.

The Magistrate said these thefts must be stamped out and the public protected. The Magistrate said the cases were not eases for probation. The accused wore of mature age and trusted Government servants, and he was sure they had set about their offences deliberately. When tho .sentence was imposed, a woman shrieked and fell weeping oil to bench. She had to he removed. Prior to imposing sentenoe tho Magistrate took strong exception to an article that appeared in tlie “Sun” newspaper on Wednesday regarding thefts from railways. Being published between the time of conviction and the time of sentence, it was exceedingly objectionable, he said.
