WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. .V message which appeared on 'l uesday gave a misleading statement ol the enurge brought against .Mrs Hodge, implying that she was charged with assisting Airs Neville, who is on trial on .a charge ol* murder, in e uinection with the death of a married woman. The charge was correctly stated on the following day. She was charged with assisting Airs Neville in commission ol a crime, relating to the use of an instrument on two women, other than the woman who died. It is pointed out on her behalf that she is not charegd with having anything to d;> with the charge of murder against Airs Neville.

.MURDER TRIAL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. The charge against Elizabeth Ann Neville of having murdered Elsie Davis, married worn in. at Wellington on or about July 11. 192 G, was proceeded with in the .Magistrate’s Court. The evidence was that the deceased before her death, signed a statement made in the presence of the accused that she underwent an illegal operation at the residence of Neville. Payment of £2O was made. A. second female said that an. operation was performed on her and £25 was demanded. 'I he money was paid, and the operation was performed. The case was not tinishco. Accused was liberated on bail on a security of £7OO and two securities of £l5O each. 1

A SERIOUS ALLEGATION. AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. A girl aged 18, after being discharged from the Auckland Hospital this morning, appeared in the Police Court to answer charges of manslaughter of her newly born child and concealment of birth. The Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, ordered the accused’s named to be suppressed in the me ultimo and remanded her until next Friday when the charges will be heard in conjunction with the inquest on the death of the child.

WHARF FATALITY. AY HANGAR ICI, Aug. 27. Albert- Hohlswnrth, aged 38. a. married man, with two children, died at the hospital from injuries received a week ago when he was crushed by a , ike of trucks on the Portland wharf. CHILD DROWNED. DUNEDIN, Aug. 27. Edwin John Ilachop, aged 6 years, was found drowned in the harbour this afternoon. He bad been missing from borne since Thursday.

SUDDEN DEATH. WELLINGTON. Aug. 27. Mr George Hoar, a. resident of Masterton, while undergoing medical treatment in Wellington for heart trouble, collapsed in the street while walking with his wife, and died. PREMIER, HONORED. WELLINGTON. Aug. 28. The Prime Minister was presented hist night with a gold' medal by the Returned Soldiers’ As.su. Sir Heaton Rhodes, Hon. Rolleston and a number of Returned Soldier M’s.P. were among those present. In making the presentation Col. Hall said there were only twelve other holders of the medal among whom wkis the Prince of Wales.

Hon. J. G. Coates expressed great appreciation of the compliment bestowed on him and after alluding to some war experiences reviewed what the Government had done for soldiers. I p to March 31st., 32 millions were spent on soldier repatriation and settlement. Of this thirteen and a half millions came from ordinary revenue. Large reductions were made hv the Revalution Committee, totalling nearly 2} million, and mortgages were reduced by about sixty thousand, and postponement and remissions ot rent and interest, and ill other ways to nearly ’£900,000. In pensions. £12.569.640 had been paid. The annual amount now was £112.25J and the average pension £54. In all #4,000 soldiers had been assisted under the Repatriation Act, and the percentage of men unable to repay advances was infinitesimal.
