The howls carnival was further advanced to-day in line hot weather, when the single banded championship of Australia was brought to the filial stage. The filial rounds and semifinals were played and the final will he contested on Monday. The surprise of the day was the defeat of the New Zealander Parsons in the seventh round. Parsons up to this round had played splendid howls and rt was generally expected that he would take the title to New Zealand. In the sixth round be showed the same form and Rower (Soml.li Australia) who was responsible for his elimination was not given a chance against the New Zealander. In the seventh round Parsons opened well and with the score 9-1 in his favour it was expected that Bower would he decisively defeated. Plnv in ibis match commenced at noon when the heat was terrific. This affected the New Zealander and in the Bth head when he led 9-1, his bowling became erratic and be seemed to have no command over bis bowls. Once when playing a short head, his howl found the ditch and on numerous occasions he was yards short. On another occasion, when he was lying two, he trailed the kitty on to his opponents’ wood giving the South Australian points. It, is unfortunate the players should he made to play in such heat as there was plenty of time in the afternoon to. play the remaining matches. The New Zealander failed on both short and long heads although on the play to date he has not an equal on short heads in Australia. On every occasion Parsons threw the jackvery short and twice the measuring tape had to he used. Parsons, however, on each occasion was a foot over (lie limit. Parsons had to throw in the opening head and sent the jack down short, lie won the lead for one and followed on bv taking the second for three. Rower won the third for a single hut the New Zealander won five heads in succession and led 9-1. Parsons play then slumped. Rower held the shot howl with wood that was loot oil' the jack. In the next head Parsons had a very easy shot hut sent his howl on to the brink of the ditch. Parsons for the remainder of the game howled erratically and only added three points to his score. Rower was beaten in the semi-final later in the day decisively.
Parsons by his fine sportsmanship made himself very popular.
