The funeral of the late .Mi Thomas Pot Is took place on Saturday afternoon and was attended hv a large number of friends from all round the district. The Rev. B. Hutson conducted the service at the residence and graveside. on which was placed a number of floral tributes from sorrowing friends.

District Engineer for the Public Works Department stated on Friday that, the two headings in the section of the Coleridge tunnel between tin* intake and the centre shaft, met on Wednesday afternoon. jn iin- eaur> ol hi- visit in “ vstlaud Hospital on Saturday morning the Governor-General took the opportunity to converse with every inmate possible in the main hospital, and also at the Old People’s Home, making himself thoroughly at home, and giving the inmates a vivid remembrance of the visit of the King's representative. The visitors were entertained at morning tea by the Hal roll and staff before leaving. The visit was a very successful one and gave much pleasure to the inmates of the institution, and His Excellency appeared to he very glad of the opportunity of meeting them.
Saturday’s “Lyttelton Times" states: —A proposition is on foot to arrange for a party representing the Canterbury Progress League to visit South "Westland early next year, going via the southern lakes districts. In this connection Or E. Tcichdmanil. ol Hokitika, visited Christchurch, and he left for "Wellington on Friday night. His mission is to emlavour to arrange with the Government to carry the party on the Tutanekai when that vessel makes her annual tour at the end of January or the beginning ol February. This would he a good business proposition from the Government's point of view. The party will inspect the scenic resorts and collect informtinn regarding road development and other matters. Dr Teiehelmann will return from "Wellington in a few days’ time, and if he has been successful in making the proposed arrangements. Mr P. R .Climic will then proceed with the formation a of a party fully representative of all the interests ol the Progress League.

The death took place at Westland Hospital on aturday afternoon of Xlr Alexander (Sandy) Smith, for many vears a resident ot Kimu district and latterly at South Hokitika. Deceased was a miner since the early days till old ago crept on. He was 90 years of age. The funeral took place this after-

A painful accident occurred on Saturday at Ogilvie's timber mill at Gladstone Siding, where an employee. M.r !leisenhuttel was working. He was quickly conveyed to the Grey River Hospital, where the wounds necessitated the insertion of fourteen stitches, lie is progressing as favourably as eati be expected.
