The New Political Party
ATTITUDE OF THE MAYOR OF WELLINGTON. “Press” Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) ha s declined a request from Mr C. E. Statlmm. M.P., to preside at his meeting to launch the new National Progressive and Moderate Labour Party hero on the 24tli inst. Mr Statham contrasts Mr Wright’s action with that of Dr. Thacker, M.P., in Christchurch, and to tho Mayor of Dimdin, who is president of the local executive. Tht Mayor of Wellington, however, is not likely to loso any sleep over Mr Statham’s protest, for tho new “ free for all party,” as it has been called, is not taken seriously here, either by politicians or by tho great mass of the people. Whother or not in tho course of a few years it can ho worked up to become a potent political force remains to ho seen. Its following in the present Parliament will undoubtedly ho very small. Tt is understood that Mr W. A. Veifcch, M.P., who was either a .member of the small hand that originally launched the party, or was expected to become a prominent member of it, has pulled out, and that Mr Stathnm’s solo Parliamentary supporter is Mr E. Kellctt, M.P.
