P E' unless, proprietor of the Marlborough “ Express,” covering Hadfield’s deposit for the world’s sculling championship, to he rowed either at Wanganui or Wairau. The chavnpion juvfers Wairau. but nothing is definitely fixed. Arnst starts training immediately here for tho contest, which takes place about three months hence. VALUE OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES. DARGAYILLE, Aug. 11. lion. C. J. l’arr, speaking at the ceremony of laying the foundation stoiie of a new brick infant school, the first of its kind in Norther Wairoai, s aid it would he an ill day when school committees wero abolished. They are the direct representatives of the parents, and had saved the country thousands of pounds in the cause of education. While he was in power, he would not attempt to weaken the power of local school committees. He deplored the fact that nearly 40 per cent of our hoys left school with only fourth standard certificates, and in his new proposals, some of which he outlined, was a scheme to get hold of tliese boys. He stated the financial stringency was the only thing that stopped a lot of his proposed reforms being brought- in. He was hopeful, however, that things would soon -brighten up. and allow him to carry out many much needed reforms.
