GENERAL HAIG’S REPORTS.

HEAVY ENEMY ATTACKS. LONDON April 4. Sir Douglas Haig reports - tliat the enemy this morning, after heavy artillerying strongly attacked on the whole front between the Somme and the Avre Rivers. The Germans were repulsed upon the right and in the centres of the British front; but upon the British lei t the whole weight of the assault succeeded in pressing us back a short distance in the neighbourhood of Hamel, where the fighting still continues. Further north, an enemy attack in the afternoon, to the West of Albert, was completely repulsed. The Canadian Cavalry Brigade has greatly distinguished itself during the past few days in heavy fighting so'utli\vard of/the Lute. They were engaged in many successful actions, both mounted and dismounted.

The British Aviation Corps have made several flights, despite unfavourable weather. A fight occurred, during a clear interval, between two very large aerial formations. We downed twelve planes and five of ours are missing. OF FEN Si V K R ESC MED.
