July 9 1 A deputation from the United Federation of Labor interviewed the Minister of Mines to-day in reference to various matters connected with the work ing of quartz mines. ‘ The deputation urged that the height of a rise be limited to 80 ft. on order to reduce the risks of contracting miners’ complaintIt also urged that the fan be started two hours before the day's work started: that pensions. t° sufferers from miners phthisis he increased; that no man he compelled to work in a mine at a higher temperature than 83 degrees; that no one under 18 he allowed to work underground and lie p^id 1 the minimum rate for thei mines jn the district. -The Minister gave a sympathetic, reply and promised careful consideration. He agreed with the representation about working fans, hut did not think much could he done about hoy labour just at present. NATIONAL BANK. WELLINGTON. July 7th. The National Bank of New Zealand hag received a cable advising that it is ■ proposed to declare a’ dividend of 6 per cent, on paid-up capital, equalling 13 per cent, for the year ended March 31st. £15,000 has been added to tho reserve fund, which will then he £715,000, and £42,000 has been carried forward. The directors further allocated £20,000 in a reduction on the Bank Pensions Account, and granted a bonus of 10 per cent, to tho staff.
