FOUND DEAD. NELSON, July 9tli
Charles Hockey, a resident of Takaka, was found dead in a ditch at Richmond yesterday. Deceased was last seen endeavouring to mount a horse. A GAS STRIKE. WELLINGTON, July 9. Th 0 Wellington Gas Company’s retort house mon ooased work yesterday in accordance with a notice given a fortnight ago. The retorts have since been kept going hv squads of men from the Company’s general staff, and it js hoped they will bo nblo to keep the city supplied. . - Thirty men have offered their services to roplac© tho eighteen who left, and though hanuicapped by inexperience, they managed to keep the output of gas almost up to normal.
LABOUR FALLS OUT. WELLINGTON, July 9,
Owing to differences that arose last week at th c Labour Conference, Mr. J. McCombs M.P., has severed his connection with the Labour Party. This decision was followed when the Congress adopted a resolution in favour of Stilt© control being added to th© issues at. the licensing poll. Mr. McCombs last night confirmed this report, hut declined to mako any statement at present.
