KLAN ATTACKED.
METHODS DENOUNCED BY SENATOR.
WASHINGTON, May 15. i An open attack on the Ku Klux Klan was made by Senator Underwood in his campaign for the Democratic Presiden- i tial nomination. He said : "The Klan ? issue cannot be evaded. The Klan is packing the convention delegations to j protect its interests." ;
-Senator Underwood presented official Klan correspondence tending to show that Klansmen in many States were receiving minute instructions regarding voting. Sensational charges have also been made against the Klan at the enquiry into the election of Senator Mayfield, of Texas, whose seat was contested by an anti-Klan candidate.
Senator Mayfield is accused of having entered into a conspiracy with the Ku Klux Klan to intimidate antiMayfield voters.
m Witnesses said hooded demonstrations were planned to drive negroes from the polls. Further internal troubles in the Klan have been started in libel and slander suite by the Grand Dragon of Indiana against national officers.
