SERIOUS OUTLOOK FOR FARMERS
A special representative of the Dominion, who returned on Thursday from a brief tour of the Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay, and East . Coast districts, heard during his trips doleful accounts of the effects of the prolonged dry spell. 6 In some parts of the Wairarapa farmers are going back 15 years -in tneir memory to recall such a longcontinued absence of rain. From Masterton right down to Pafiiser Bay and the ojitlook for the autumn is not very promising. The East Coast, with ran exception or two, has the appearance of brown paper. ,At Ohonga, near Akitio, cattle are reported to be d^ng of thirst, as the streams have aliened up. Rabbits overrun the foldings. Hawke's Bay is in the grip of a very serious drought. Enquiries are being made on all hands for agistment country, and already cattle and sheep are being moved to more fortunate regions, such .as Makuri, where there has been rain recently and dews are falling nightly. In .some parts of lower Hawke's Bay prayers are being offered for rain. Bush fires are rasing on the Rimut«kas, between Kaitoke and the Summit.
