FARMER SENTENCED FOR FRAUD'

George Cock, a farmer, formerly* of Alston, near Preston, and now of FTeetwood, was indicted at Carlisle Assizes for attempting to obtain £116 by false pretences from TKo.rnborroTV* and Co., auctioneers, Penrith, Cumberland. The accused, it was alleged, entered two cows named Wild Bessie tlie Second and Bonnie Mary as pedigree animals at Penrith sale of pedigree Shorthorns. Wild Bessie was sold to Captain Morley, of Ohinpenhain, Wilts, and Bonnie Mary to Major Sitwell, of' Derbyshire. The case for the prosecution was that the animals were, in fact, nonpedigree. For the defence it was ur^e-i that O>ek bought Wild Bessie and' Bonni© Mary, and sold them to* Mr. Jolly, of Poulton-le-Fylde, who died last Christmas. Later he bought from a farm near Alston two animals which he thought' he recognised as the two pedigree- animals Be had previously owned. The jury found Cock guilty, and tlie judge sentenced' him to six months' imprisonment.
