NARROW ESCAPE.
A LAUNCH SINKS
(by telegraph —press association J AUCKLAND, Aug. 26.' A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred at Auckland on Saturday night, when the small launch Lenore was sunk and the occupants thrown in the water. About 8 p.m., when the Lenore, with Mr. Hayson (owner) and his wife and brother* on board, was passing the steamer Marama, anchored in the stream, a steward on the steamer hailed the launch and asked for a passage ashore.
Mr. Hayson ran the launch alongside the steamer, when about a dozen of the Marama's crew jumped on board the launch, which capsized and sank, throwing all the occupants into the water. A boat was lowered from the Marama, and the people in the water were rescued with difficulty. The launch has not been recovered yet.
